NARNIA Will be Demonstrating K9 NOSE WORK!
Date: Tuesday, August 30, 2016
Location: NAHS (1620 W. Diehl Rd., Naperville)
Narnia Pet & Behavior Training's
Joy Rittierodt, CPDT-KA, CNWI & Dr Therese Simon
Joy Rittierodt, CPDT-KA, CNWI and Dr Therese Simon from Narnia Pet Behavior and Training will demo the new dog sport known as K9 Nose Work. Every dog has natural abilities to search for a treat or favorite toy. Narnia developed an interest in teaching this sport because we wanted to be able to offer an activity for those dogs that we often see who could not participate in other class room activities because of shy, fearful or dog reactive tendencies. Only one dog can search at a time and the searches must be done in such a way that the working dog does not see other dogs. High energy dogs use up calories as they run around determining where the trained scent is located, while older or disabled dogs can benefit from a less active way to exercise their brains. However both Joy and Dr Simon have dogs that just enjoy the sport for what it is, as do many other breeds that love to use their noses!
The activity is an excellent way to build confidence and focus with the neglected, mistreated or abandoned dogs that many shelters see on a regular basis. To learn more about the sport visit the "National Association of Canine Scent Work at nacsw.net.
