Adopt a Cat

Listed below are the cats currently available for adoption at NAHS. Kittens under the age of 5 months are typically not listed because they find new homes quickly. If you're interested in kittens under the age of 5 months, please call the shelter for more information. The list of available cats is updated frequently, so please check the site often. For more information our adoption process, click here. Boots 2Y 9M Domestic Shorthair Male Available No

I know what you’re thinking, a cat can’t be named Boots without any boots!  Between you and me, I think my previous owners were pretty big Shrek fans.  I do think we’re pretty alike in color, but that’s where the similarities end.  I’m more of a gentle and mellow cat and not a fan of adventure.  I would prefer my new home to be more calm than active, especially since I can be shy when getting to know new people.  I might be OK with another calm cat in the home and could possibly live with a calm dog as well (preferably one that has met cats before).  It would be best if children in my new home were at least 8 years old.  I’m excited for you to come meet me!

Bridget 3Y 0M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

All I need is 24 hours in my new home, and I'll be up on all the gossip.  Beware, though, that I might spill some of your secrets. I'm a good listener, but an even better talker. So, if you're searching for a quiet kitty to complete your family, sorry, but I'm not that girl. Besides talking, I like to play with toys, run, jump and eat. Oh, and did I mention I like to eat? (Get the picture?) I love my food, and I do require a special prescription diet… one for cats with sensitive stomachs. I might like to live with another cat, but I don’t know for sure, and I've never met a dog. C'mon and check me out!

Carys 0Y 11M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

Outside of Wales I don’t suppose you meet too many cats with Welsh names, so I could be the first one you know. My name means "to love," and rhymes with Ferris. I was found as a stray walking around downtown Joliet, and to make matters worse, I had a cold. I felt awful. A really nice lady found me, but she couldn't keep me, so I came to NAHS. They gave me medicine for my cold; now I'm all better and on the prowl for me new (and hopefully last) forever home. I like to play (who doesn't), and I enjoy being petted (again, who doesn't). I can be a little a little shy and nervous a first, but I will become comfortable in a new place as long as I can do it at my own pace. I can live with other gentle cats (no bullies, please), but I'm not too sure about dogs.

Charmed & Shadow 12Y 12M Domestic Shorthair Female, Male Available Charmed, No; Shadow, All Four

We’re a pair of best friends who’ve been together almost all of our lives, and we’d like to enjoy our senior years in a calm, quite home. We’re quite shy, so a household without a lot of activity is where we’d be happiest. It would also be ideal if our new human companion(s) were home a lot so that we could get a lot of attention. The minute you start to pet either of us, we become purring machines. We do require a special lifetime prescription diet and would enjoy being the only pets in the house.

Chelsea 4Y 11M Domestic Shorthair Female Available None

I'm a pretty laid back girl, happy to curl up in a nice warm bed and take a nap. When I'm feeling playful, I enjoy laser pointers and chasing after strings. My favorite thing though is being scratched underneath my chin and behind my ears. It would be best if children in my new home were at least 8 years old, since really young kids seem to stress me out. I get along with some other cats but I don't think that I have ever met a dog. If a mellow girl is what you're looking for to complete your family, stop by and meet me soon!

Cleo 8Y 2M Domestic Longhair Female Available No

You've heard of the Cat in the Hat? How about a Cat in the Box? I'm a shy girl, so I like hanging out in places where I feel safe, like boxes. I'm here because my human companion (I don't like the term Owner) had to move and was not allowed any pets were he was going. So here I am. I'm quite gentle and mellow, and I'd be happiest in a quiet, calm home. I'll need some time to adjust to a new home environment, but please give me a chance. I'll promise to do everything right. I lived with another cat in my previous home, so if you have one, I'd probably be okay with that as long as the kitty is gentle. My only other request is that you brush me at least once a week so my lovely long hair doesn't get matted.

Dreamsicle 5Y 0M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

So you think I'm named Dreamsicle only because I'm orange? That's part of it, but the other reason is that I literally could have frozen to death. Someone put me in a box, sealed that box with tape, and put me on a street corner in Chicago… oh, did I forget to mention that is was negative 2 degrees outside? Then, through a series of fortuitous events, I ended up at NAHS. Believe me, I'm counting my blessings. I've been through a lot, so I'm a little shy and nervous around people I don't know; I just need to know that I can trust you. After I do, I'll be your constant companion. Playing with toys, watching the wildlife from a safe spot inside, and lazy days basking in sunshine are the things my dreams are made of. I can live with other gentle cats, and maybe a dog (but I've never met one, so I'm not sure). I think kids in my new home should be at least 8 years old. Can you help make my dreams come true?

Felix 5Y 0M Domestic Shorthair Male Available No

Felix the cat. The wonderful wonderful cat. Now I've put that song in your head, right? Sorry 'bout that. I am a wonderful cat, but I'm also very, very shy. I was originally in a home with many cats, then all of a sudden we were all at Chicago Animal Care and Control. I wasn't cared for well in my home, and volunteers at animal control knew my only chance was to be transferred out to another shelter. Since coming to NAHS, I've been in a foster home where I was given good food to help restore my fur to good condition. I was also given all the time and patience I needed to adjust and learn how to trust. Now I'm ready to find my forever home. The home environment should be very calm and quiet. Once I've adjusted, I'll show you how I like to play. I can live with gentle dogs and cats, and I think children should be a little older. Please don't pass me by.

Hilo and Iselle 0Y 12M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

Don't worry, we're nothing like the hurricanes for which we're named… we're much calmer! In fact, the best home environment for us is one where there's not a lot of activity or noise. We're a bonded pair of sweet young girls who are very shy and a little unsure of the world. We were in a home, but there was way too much going on: no one was ever there and to make matters worse, a puppy who loved to chase us was added to the mix. We were not amused. I guess the puppy was more popular because the next thing we knew, we were back here searching for another home. All we ask for is a little patience and understanding. It would be best if kids in our new home are at least 8 years old, and no other pets in the home. Won't you give us a chance?

P.S. We look exactly alike; that's why only one of us is in the photo  :)

Lacie 6Y 6M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

I'm a friendly girl who will be happiest with someone who has a lot of time to spend with me. I get a little stressed out when I'm home alone. My previous family said that I'm pretty needy and that I might have some separation anxiety. I like lots of different types of toys: glitter balls, feathers, toy mice, and catnip. I also like jump at those wand-type toys with a feather on the end. F-U-N! Because of my desire for a calm, quiet home, I'd be best without children (too much activity) and no other pets.

Licorice 9Y 5M Domestic Shorthair Male Available No

What's a sweet and handsome guy like me doing here?  Well I'll be honest, I'm not really sure.  I was found in a parking lot and brought to NAHS when nobody claimed me at animal control.  I like being near people and getting attention, but I can be a little shy at first.  One of the quickest ways to my heart is through treats.  Give me one (or two) and I'll be your best friend!  I seem to get along with most other cats but I'm not sure if I've ever met a dog before.  Don't wait too long to come say hi!

Lucy 6Y 1M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

I'm a sweet girl who tends to be a little on the shy side. I used to have a nice quiet home where I felt safe, comfortable, and loved. Unfortunately, my family moved to a new and very different environment. My new home was loud, chaotic, and very stressful for me. My mom's new job took her away from me all the time, and all of a sudden I was living here at the shelter. It's a nice place, but I would love to have a loving home of my own again where I can cuddle and play with my family. I would feel most comfortable in a home without loud dogs or children; a quiet life is the life for me!

Maggie 9Y 2M Domestic Longhair Female Available No

Are you looking for a feline companion who's affectionate, chatty, mellow (sometimes shy), cuddly and gentle? If you answered Yes, stop what you're doing and ask to meet me. Saying any more good things about myself would just be bragging, so I'll stop. But, I really am quite a catch. I would be happiest in a calm, quite home where there are no other pets. I can be easily intimidated by them, and I'd like to feel as if I'm queen of my castle. One thing you should know is that I walk a little funny -- my back legs are wobbly-- but I've been checked by a vet, and he said it's probably something I've had all my life; it's nothing to worry about. Do you have a quiet, loving home? If so, I think I'd be the purrfect addition.

Roman 0Y 9M Domestic Shorthair Male Available No

Ciao tutti! Mi chiamo Roman e sono un gatto molto cordiale.

Okay, enough of that. My name is Roman, and I'm quite friendly. I like all things Italian -- especially the food, but that doesn't mean I should have any. Pasta is full of carbs, and it's not good for me. I came to NAHS by way of Chicago Animal Care and Control. I was relinquished there by my family; I don't know why, but now I'm at NAHS, and I'm not looking back. Like all young cats, I like to play and sometimes stir up a little mischief. I'm used to living with at least one other cat, so I might enjoy that in my new home, especially if that cat likes to play. I'm pretty easy going, so I think I'd be okay living with young children as long as they understand how to treat and respect pets. I look forward to see you soon. Arrivederci!

Waldo 6Y 8M Domestic Shorthair Male Available No

Where's Waldo? I'm here… the orange tabby wearing the brown collar. I don't have to worry about blending in with the crowd, because in my opinion, I'm one in a million. I was found wandering the streets of Chicago, all alone, just wanting someone to care for me. I'm very thankful now to have a safe place to be and nothing to worry about. I'm a pretty gentle guy, and my idea of a great day would be bird watching (from inside the house), sleeping in the sun, having a bite to eat, nudging you for some pets, and repeating. I am FIV positive, but that doesn't mean I can't live a normal life. My stress level should be kept as low as possible, and I should definitely have yearly vet visits. If you're lucky enough to welcome me into your family, please don't dress me in a red and white stiped shirt.  LOL!
